Nestled on South Africa’s Overberg coast near Walker Bay, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve unfolds a botanical wonderland known as the Cape Floral Kingdom.

It is here that the Grootbos Florilegium celebrates over two decades of ecological dedication through a one-of-a-kind fusion of art and conservation.

The Legacy of the Cape Floral Kingdom

This region is one of the most biodiverse on Earth, home to thousands of unique fynbos species. Grootbos has spent over 25 years mapping, studying, and protecting this extraordinary landscape. The Florilegium is the creative culmination of that effort - a celebration of nature through fine art.

What Is the Florilegium?

A florilegium is a curated collection of botanical illustrations. Grootbos now hosts the first contemporary florilegium in Africa, featuring more than 120 rare and endemic plant species brought to life through exquisite hand-painted works. These illustrations often include pollinators, insects, and subtle ecological details that tell a deeper story.

Artistic Collaboration Across Continents

Created by 44 artists from around the world - including some of South Africa’s most respected botanical illustrators - each artwork also includes a second scientific plate that explores the plant’s anatomy or its ecological relationships. It’s art that educates, inspires, and connects.

Seeing Conservation Through Art

The Florilegium isn’t just a gallery of beautiful images. It’s a vital part of Grootbos’s broader conservation and community mission. Proceeds from art prints support ongoing botanical research, youth art programs, and environmental education. It’s a meaningful way to support the land through creativity.

The Gallery Tour Experience

Guests can choose from two unforgettable experiences. The Half-Day Tour includes a guided 4x4 botanical safari through the reserve, followed by a visit to the Florilegium gallery, ending with a refined three-course lunch with panoramic views over the fynbos.

For a slower pace, the Gallery-only Tour offers a peaceful two-hour journey through the Hannarie Wenhold Botanical Art Gallery, where rooms are themed around ecological concepts like pollination, fire, and threatened species.
